This summer has a blockbuster receipt-rewards campaign, and the receipts that unlock the rewards are read and validated by Tabscanner.

To celebrate the release of Disney’s live-action Moana, Subway has teamed up with Fandango on one of the biggest quick-service movie tie-ins of the year: buy a meal, upload your receipt, and get money off your cinema tickets. It is a textbook receipt-rewards mechanic, running at national scale, and behind the scenes the receipt validation that makes it work is powered by the Tabscanner Receipt OCR API.

Here is how the campaign works, and exactly where our technology fits.

A Subway meal that pays for movie night

From 11 June, Subway guests in the US can turn any six-inch, footlong, wrap or salad meal into a Moana Movie Meal Deal for just $1 more. The upgrade comes with one of five collectible cups featuring Moana, Maui, Mini-Maui, Pua and Heihei.

The real prize is on the cup. Every qualifying meal deal earns a $15 Fandango promo code toward a ticket to see the new Moana in theaters, and buying two or more deals in a single visit bumps that up to $30. The film hits cinemas on 10 July 2026, right in the middle of the promotion.

For Subway and Disney it is a brilliant piece of summer marketing that turns a lunch run into a trip to the movies. For the customer it could not be simpler. And for the rewards to actually go out, every single receipt has to be checked, fast and accurately. That is the part most people never see.

How shoppers claim the reward

  1. Buy a Moana Movie Meal Deal at Subway and grab your collectible cup.
  2. Scan the QR code printed on the cup.
  3. Upload a photo of your itemized Subway receipt.
  4. The receipt is read and validated in seconds — this is where Tabscanner runs.
  5. Receive your $15 (or $30) Fandango promo code.
  6. Redeem it at Fandango.com or in the Fandango app for Moana tickets.

Snap, upload, done. The hard part — turning a photo of a folded, faded, badly-lit receipt into trustworthy structured data — happens instantly in the background.

Where Tabscanner fits: the receipt-validation engine

Every reward in a campaign like this hinges on one question: did this person actually buy the qualifying product? Answering it, millions of times, in real time, is exactly what Tabscanner does.

When a customer uploads their Subway receipt, Fandango Rewards passes the image to the Tabscanner Receipt OCR API, which:

  • reads the merchant, date, line items, quantities and totals straight from the photo;
  • confirms a qualifying Moana Movie Meal Deal purchase;
  • handles every receipt format, print quality and phone camera without manual setup;
  • flags duplicate and tampered receipts to protect the promotion from fraud;
  • and returns clean, structured data in real time, so Fandango can issue the right code on the spot.

No manual review. No data-entry team keying in receipts one by one. Just accurate validation at the scale of a national campaign — millions of receipts, each read in a couple of seconds.

Why receipt OCR is the engine behind modern rewards

Receipt-based promotions have quietly become one of the most powerful tools in marketing. They let a brand reward a real purchase, capture genuine first-party shopper data, and build a direct relationship with customers who buy through third parties like a supermarket, a cinema, or in this case a Subway counter.

But a receipt-rewards programme is only ever as good as its receipt layer. If validation is slow, customers drop off. If it is inaccurate, you either pay out on receipts you should not, or you reject genuine customers and damage the brand. If it cannot scale, a viral campaign becomes a backlog.

That is why Fandango Rewards built this experience on Tabscanner. Nine years and more than a billion receipts in, our API delivers 99 to 99.99% accuracy, custom training tuned to high-volume receipt formats, real-time speed, and the throughput to handle a campaign of this size without breaking a sweat.
